Historical Background

Laboratory for Thermal Engineering and Energy - since 1972. has continued the work of the former Laboratory for Reactor Thermal Engineering (founded in 1958.). Main research topics:

  • research and development in thermal power generation
  • process engineering
  • fluid flow
  • heat and mass transfer
  • combustion
  • thermal properties of materials
  • temperature metrology
  • experimental research
  • mathematical modelling
  • field measuments of flow and thermodynamic parameters
  • coal combustion technologies
  • drying
  • thermal plasma technologies
  • renewable energy sources (biomass)
  • nuclear facilities safety.

The International Centre for Heat and Mass Transfer (ICHMT), was established in Institute of Nuclear Sciences Vinca, Laboratory for Thermal Engineering and Energy, almost thirty years ago, to serve as a meeting point for people from the different political groups of countries, and it served as an important bridge and meeting site where people from any country could come to learn, to teach, and to communicate in important areas of heat and mass transfer. Publications from the Centre from symposia, workshops and other specialized conferences have found wide circulation in the technical community and are archived in several international sites. Technical societies from more than thirty countries are member institutions of ICHMT. The Secretariat of the Centre remained in Belgrade for almost 24 years and traditionally organized one seminar a year, usually in Dubrovnik , until early 1990s when the start of the political turmoil in former Yugoslavia unavoidably hampered the functioning of the Secretariat. The Executive committee of the Centre started looking for a new home for the Secretariat of the Centre and, in September 1992, the Centre to move to the Ankara , Turkey . The fact that the Centre continue to play a vital role in fostering research and development gives evidence of the farsightedness of the founding fathers. The Centre published over 40 Proceedings until 1998 on various specific aspects of heat and mass transfer. International participation in the meetings was always a major aim. The total number of participants in the 62 meetings of ICHMT since 1968 is over 4000. These attendees came from over 60 different countries.

NB: Institute of Nuclear Sciences Vinca has changed name from the Boris Kidric Institute of Nuclear Sciences.
