Representatives of the Vinča Institute of Nuclear Sciences, Director Dr. Slavko Dimović, Dr. Predrag Škobalj, and Milan Ljušić, discussed the strategic development of Serbia's energy sector through the integration of nuclear science and innovation with the Minister of Mining and Energy, Dubravka Đedović Handanović.
During the discussion, the Vinča Institute of Nuclear Sciences was, according to Minister Đedović Handanović, recognized as a leading scientific institution and a key strategic partner for the state in establishing a national nuclear program. The Minister particularly emphasized the importance of cooperation with the Vinča Institute in the context of strengthening human resources and the scientific base, stressing that this institution, with its personnel, technical, and research capacities, represents the foundation for the planning, education, and implementation of programs for the peaceful application of nuclear energy in Serbia.
"Serbia has, through amendments to the Energy Law, opened up the possibility for the development of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. The Ministry, on behalf of the Government, is working on forming a special sector for nuclear energy, and cooperation with the Vinča Institute will be extremely important to us", emphasized Minister Đedović Handanović.
The Director of the Institute, Dr. Slavko Dimović, acquainted the Minister with the Institute's development direction, including Vinča's ambition to take a leading role in educating new personnel and providing scientific support for the national nuclear program.
"Our goal is for the Institute to become a regional educational center in the field of peaceful application of nuclear energy, and to lead this strategically important process for Serbia from a scientific and educational aspect," Dimović pointed out.
The Minister emphasized that a Preliminary Technical Study on the peaceful application of nuclear energy in Serbia is currently underway, representing the first step in defining the program's further development. The study will provide a basis for analyzing market, technological, economic, and legal aspects, according to the guidelines of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
During the discussion, other initiatives of the Institute were also presented, including the construction of a pilot plant for green hydrogen production, as well as solar power plant projects and heat pump systems, the realization of which would significantly enhance the Institute's energy efficiency.
The Vinča Institute continues to be a reliable scientific partner to the state in building a modern, safe, and sustainable energy future for Serbia.
