On the same day, two prominent experts from the “Vinča” Institute appeared on two television programs to share important information and perspectives with the public on current topics in the fields of radiation and nuclear safety, as well as Serbia’s energy strategy.
Dr. Predrag Božović, Chair of the Commission for Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security of the “Vinča” Institute, spoke on the program Beogradska hronika on Radio Television of Serbia (RTS). The topic of the interview was the potential hazards posed by radioactive lightning rods, their number across Serbia, and the questions of responsibility and jurisdiction for their removal and safe disposal.
“As long as radioactive lightning rods remain upright and stable, they do not pose an immediate threat to the public. However, if they are knocked over or damaged, serious consequences can occur. All poles bearing radioactive lightning rods are marked with a yellow radiation warning sign. If citizens come across such a pole, they should immediately contact the Serbian Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security Directorate, specifically its inspection department,” said Dr. Božović.

At the same time, on the show Mi danas on TV Tanjug, Dr. Predrag Škobalj spoke about one of today’s most pressing development topics: the construction of a nuclear reactor for energy production in Serbia, along with the challenges ahead on that path.

“The ‘Vinča’ Institute is on the verge of forming its own Commission that will serve as a knowledge base for the Government of the Republic of Serbia — we will be the ones to clarify all uncertainties. I repeat, we all need to unite, and all experts on this topic must be gathered in one place. We must not be caught unprepared when these technologies arrive, with no one asking us for input,” concluded Dr. Škobalj.

These two media appearances clearly demonstrate the strong expert role of the “Vinča” Institute, which not only brings together top scientists in the fields of nuclear and radiation technologies but also actively engages in public dialogue and citizen education. The “Vinča” Institute continues to develop and affirm its social responsibility, promoting science-based information, raising awareness about safety issues, and offering a vision for Serbia’s sustainable technological development.
