The Vinča Institute of Nuclear Sciences once again confirmed its leading role in the development and promotion of green hydrogen in Serbia through its active participation in the international conference Green Hydrogen as a Guideline for the Energy Transition, held on 17 and 18 March 2026 in Belgrade.
The conference brought together representatives of government institutions, industry, the scientific community, and international organizations from more than 20 countries, with the aim of addressing key issues related to the energy transition and the development of the hydrogen economy. Particular focus was placed on concrete projects, investments, and the integration of renewable energy sources into the future energy system.
The Vinča Institute delegation included representatives of the Laboratory of Physical Chemistry (050) and the Laboratory of Thermal Engineering and Energy (140), while Assistant Director for Technological Development, Dr Predrag Škobalj, took part as a panelist in a discussion dedicated to the role of hydrogen in stabilizing the electric power system and integrating renewable energy sources.
During the conference, it was highlighted that the Vinča Institute had been selected by the Ministry of Mining and Energy of the Republic of Serbia to implement a pilot plant for green hydrogen production, which will be financed by the European Union through IPA funds. This project represents one of the key steps toward the development of domestic hydrogen infrastructure and the strengthening of Serbia’s energy independence.
In addition, the Vinča Institute has been recognized as the central institution for education and capacity building in the field of hydrogen technologies, with a significant role in bringing the concept of green hydrogen closer to the general public and strengthening cooperation among science, industry, and decision-makers.
The Institute’s participation in this conference confirms its strategic importance in the development of innovative energy solutions and positions it as one of the key actors in the process of green energy transition in Serbia and the region.
